M Price showed the full potential of its off-site manufacturing capabilities on the Canada Water project, saving time and money on a landmark scheme.
Every construction firm wants the chance to work on a landmark project, a building that imprints on memories and impacts on the skyline. And if that skyline happens to represent the vista of a capital city, so much the better.
For M Price, working as the facade contractor on the 24-storey residential block in Canada Water in South-east London, is one such project. Designed by Glenn Howells, it will act as the gateway to the Canada Water site.
As well as one central 24-floor tower, four other low rise buildings in the form of townhouses and apartments with floor to ceiling glazing and brick facades will also be developed to create 688 new homes.
The building’s cladding will be made up from shifting planes of glazing with vertical columns running over them up the height of the tower. At the top is a two storey facade overrunning the roof on the three broader sides of the tower and enclosing a garden pushing the height up to approximately 80m.
All of the cladding panels will be fabricated and glazed off site, and delivered and installed from cranes.
This eliminates the need for external scaffolding saving time and money for the client.
It is little surprise that working on such a high profile scheme has been a career highlight for M Price Managing Director Colin Chapman and he is particularly proud of the off-site manufacturing: “This is the sort of project that, in the past, would normally be reserved for bigger, European contractors. This building’s facade will be manufactured off site and all the panels craned up onto it. Its fairly unusual for a UK contractor to be doing it this way. You need good design, factory space and a strong cash reserver to fund materials in advance. But it sets us apart from our competitors.”
M Price recently worked on the glass facade at one of the most high-profile locations in the capital, here’s how it achieved the perfect finish.
M Price had to pull together all of its expertise and past experience of working in the London office market to deliver a flawless facade on Wichmore House, a scheme just off Fleet Street which is about as central as you can get and the hub one of London’s financial and media districts.
The 80,000ft office space required the design, supply and installation of over 4,000m² of curtain walling and anodised rain screen panels from the lower ground floor to the terraces. All roles taken on by M Price.
The brief was demanding as the client was after a crisp “seamless” glass facade which meant larger glass sizes and weights. Some panes weighed as heavy as 280kg. M Price got around these problems by consulting with specialists in this area, Sika Structural Glazing, to ensure that the process went as smoothly as possible and created the desired finished effect.
Adam Waring, M Price’s Contracts Director says: “Strong project management was required to deliver this project and M Price assembled a team of experienced personnel to design and manage the installation works coupled with a close working relationship with the projects supply chain including the aluminium glass and rain screen suppliers.
The main design concerns emanated from the need to re-clad the existing concrete frame with an exacting facade and to provide a contemporary appearance; overcoming all of the interface tolerances and structural position problems in the process.
M Price commissioned a survey of the existing structure once all the existing cladding had been removed. The original facade had been removed by others prior to Bam being appointed and as such M Price and Bam had access scaffolding that had not been designed to accommodate the setting out of the new facade. This posed several challenges: designing the works to meet the architectural intent, the setting out and structural limitations of the existing structure, as well as the logical constraints. The anodised finished of the works meant that an extended supply chain had to be managed to deliver the project within a short and demanding programmed period.”
Dalston has a new underground station, and above ground M Price is installing the total facade on a very sought after residential scheme.
The development of the multibillion-pound East London line extension through the capital has created a real buzz around locations across the city that are now better connected than ever before. One of these areas is Dalston in north London. WIth a brand new station opening just last year, Dalston has seen a huge surge in activity and interest. And where activity goes, homeowners follow.
M Price played a central and integral role as facade contractor on this multimillion-pound residential and mixed-use scheme that is being built directly above the new Dalston Junction Underground station. A mixture of two-, three- and four-bedroom luxury apartments, this residential project is one of the most exciting currently under development in the capital. And certainly Dalston Square is a development with some of the most convenient transport links.
The striking cladding is instrumental in ensuring that this building makes a real impact – setting it apart from others around it. Around 21,000m worth of cladding panels were required to bring this scheme to life.
The project is divided into two phases, the North and South Blocks. The Dalston Junction North Blocks have now been complete, on time and on budget, and the South Blocks construction programme has been accelerated as a result of such positive feedback.

This was undoubtedly achieved on the project at Dalston.”
